Whether working with a Mediator to coach you through a conflict or participating in a Mediation session with someone with whom you are having conflict, there are typically 5 Steps to follow in conflict resolution.

1. The Introduction and Ground Rules

The Mediator explains the Ground Rules for the session.  There must be an agreement before proceeding.

3. Identifying Issues and Needs

After listening to all sides of the story, the mediators guide the student to identify the

underlying issue/main source of conflict.

2. Storytelling

A student gets a turn to tell their side of a story while the mediators listen very carefully.

4. Finding Solutions

Mediators help students to think of as many possible solutions that could

help in solve the underlying issue.

5. Final Agreement

Mediators lead students to a workable solution that is mutually satisfying.  A written copy may be kept on file with the program advisors.
